Don't think I heard he passed, but someone did ask me if he was still around over the weekend. I wasn't sure. I knew he must be pretty old now because he was up there when he took his last fun ride in a race, maybe 10 years ago?
But I did think I saw him in the pits, wasn't sure it was him though as it's been a while since I seen him last. Glad to heard he did make it over and is still out and about on occassion.
I wonder if Jeff was with him? From the Simcoe paper. I can't remember if Jeff is his son or grandson.

I could not believe it when Larry Downs told me he was taking to John at Waterford, and that JD was upset no one had told him of the races, as he only heard of it SUN AM, in time to get there in the afternoon. I do not know how the story started of his demise, but I have been telling people in FL for two years now he had passed. In fact I wrote a short obit for one of the AOMC FL news letters. This is the guy, a Delhi tobacco farmer, who won in CRH when it was the senior PRO class, and turned down the ride in Supertest III, after Art Asbury gave it up, and the late Bob Hayward got in. [John's wife said NO, because they had two young daughters.] JD would take the bus down to Lakeland, FL, during the winter, with his PR in a suit case, to run in a big 'cash' money race, and need the prize money to buy his ticket back. A great man.

I dunno how he didn't find out... I, John Lawrence, I think Eric ORchard and likely someone at Proctor Marine all started talking to Jeff Dirtinger at about Christmas about the race this summer up until the Wednesday before the race. Jeff is the sports editor at the Simcoe Reformer. He is also John's son or grandson, forget which. I guess they are not close or else John's memory is getting old?
Brian, cool notes about John (isn't it Jon?)! I heard he was big into Pro stuff, but never heard about the Supertest stuff! Neat!
